It is a speech delivered with little or no preparation. In an extempore, a person needs representation of his/her spontaneity in language, his fluency/ speed, his vocabulary, his creativity in ideas.
Although it is spontaneous, it requires great effort to deliver on extempore successfully. In corporate setup “Extempore” is one of the ways to assess a prospective employee’s communication skills and thinking abilities. It is also yardstick of one’s social awareness.
